Pilates
Pilates is a physical fitness system of movement developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20th century. Pilates called his method ‘Contrology’. In his book, Return to Life (1920), Joseph Pilates presented his method as the art of controlled movement. The method puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, precision, creating a strong, yet flexible physique as well as developing a strong core—which Pilates’ referred to as the Powerhouse. Mat Pilates is ideal for anyone who has limited space whether in the privacy of their own home, office and even while traveling! In addition, Andrea owns a Pilates reformer which is housed in her at-home studio. The reformer is one of many pieces of Pilates apparatus. If a client has access to use of a reformer, Andrea is happy to provide instruction on a one-on one basis.

Yoga
All you need is a Yoga mat—sticky
mat! The word Yoga means to “yoke” or to “join together.” Yoga also indicates “union” or “oneness” with one’s self. Yoga is a mind and body practice born over 5,000 years ago in India. Various styles (branches) of Yoga are practiced by millions of people all over the globe who proclaim its health benefits, both physically and mentally. A regular Yoga practice combines physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), as well as meditation and relaxation. People of all ages, fitness levels and physical conditions can practice Yoga. The branches of Yoga vary greatly, however, and can be quite confusing to a beginner level client. Many people ask the question:
“Which style is right for me?”
Or
“My friend told me to take Hot Yoga, what is that?”
Let’s break it down a bit. Andrea teaches the more traditional Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is a wonderful practice and is perfect for Yoga “newbies”, and is also enjoyed by advanced practitioners as well. Hatha Yoga is practiced at a slower pace, with focus on the breath, controlled movements and stretching. Practitioners learn the asanas, (postures) accompanied with breathing (pranayama), while enjoying all the benefits a Yoga practice has to offer.
Andrea also teaches Vinyasa style Yoga, which is similar to Hatha in the postures and breathing but moves a bit quicker. Vinyasa Yoga provides similar benefits as Hatha but moves in a flow-like style, spending less time in one particular asana while also focusing on combining the breath with movement. Many people choose to practice both styles of Yoga depending on their needs.
Benefits include:
-
Increase Flexibility
-
Increase Strength
-
Increase Balance
-
Ease Back or Arthritis Pain
-
Stress Relief
-
Improve energy and Mood
-
Create self-awareness and calm the mind
Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga is a slow paced branch of Yoga. In Yin Yoga, the practitioner holds the asanas (postures) longer which creates a deeper stretch into the fascia (connective tissue of the body), while also utilizing deeper breath. Yin Yoga can be combined with meditation practices in order to create a deeper feeling of relaxation and promote healthy sleep.
Meditation
As with Yoga, millions of people world wide practice some form of meditation. There is no “one” way to meditate. Finding a practice that’s right for you can be tricky and often people give up, saying, “I can’t meditate.” Andrea is an experienced meditation teacher, focusing on two types of meditation:
Visual Meditation and Mindfulness Meditation. Both practices can be done anywhere, at any time of the day and practiced by anyone.
Mindfulness meditation is a practice whereby the practitioner pays attention to their thoughts as they pass through the mind. One does not judge these thoughts or become involved. The practitioner simply observes, as if being on the outside looking in.
Visual mediation is a guided meditation practice known by many names, including: visual imagery and mental rehearsal. Many practitioners enjoy this type of meditation because the guide, or teacher, is leading them through their visualization practice.
For clients who are uncertain which type of meditation feels right for them, Andrea is happy to guide them through both types in a one half hour format.
In addition, Andrea typically adds 5-6 minutes of either form of meditation at the conclusion of her Yoga classes.
Benefits include:
-
Stress reduction
-
Reduced anxiety
-
Ease symptoms of depression
-
Improved sleep
-
Increased lung capacity due to deeper breathing
-
Calming the mind
-
Can lower blood pressure
General Fitness
A perfect class for anyone wishing to improve their fitness level as well as for those who choose not to take a particular “style” or “method.”
General fitness is also ideal for those who have completed physical therapy for a specifically diagnosed condition and wish to work with a highly skilled personal trainer who is qualified to address any contraindications regarding their particular situation. Andrea has extensive experience working with individuals in the post-rehab category.
General fitness classes can include small props, including: light hand held weights, a stretch strap as well as a small pillow or small squeeze (fitness) ball. General fitness includes: core strengthening, resistance training for upper and lower body and flexibility training.
Stretch
It is Andrea’s strong belief after teaching stretch classes for the past 25+years, that flexibility training is the MOST NEGLECTED component of physical fitness programs. When our muscles remain in the contracted state, our joints have to bear the load which can lead to an increased rate of injury and less blood flow to our muscles and tendons. A commitment to a stretch program does not have to take hours upon hours. Andrea teaches a thorough stretch class, in either a half hour or one hour format.
Floor-Barre
Floor-Barre is a highly specialized class designed specifically for participants who have or have had ballet class experience. Floor-Barre is unlike other Barre classes as it takes the “Barre” section of the ballet dance class to the floor. Originated by Zena Rommett, Floor-Barre classes are popular among dancers recovering from injury as it takes gravity out of the standing Barre work and is easier on the hips. Throughout her professional dance career, Andrea studied with Ms. Rommett at STEPS on Broadway, the prestigious dance studio in New York City. Knowledge of ballet terminology is required in order for Andrea to provide a safe environment for her clients.
Andrea offers a complementary evaluation to interested participants prior to participating in this class.
